Round Conference Tables

Can you put polyacrylic finish over oil based stain on a wooden table?

I refinished our conference room table and must protect it now...do I go (water based) polyacrylic or other? Polyurethane?

  1. Get a fast drying poly. http://www.minwax.com/products/oil_based_clear_protective_finishes/fast_drying_polyurethane.html
  2. Polyurethane has lately come under fire as being too dense to use on wood, leading to sun-fade and delamination of the finish. Older coatings, such as shellac, varnish and lacquer are being reinvented as water-based, easier to use alternatives to coating your furniture. http://www.ehow.com/how_2303324_finish-wood-furniture-lacquer.html I used poly in the past, only to see it fail a few years later. I now use only shellac, lacquer, or tung oil on furniture, and a product called Waterlox on hardwood floors.
  3. I would suggest a sanding sealer, followed by a few coatings of oil based polyurethane. Nothing seems to bring out the grains and beauty of the wood like this.
