Round Conference Tables

what is meant by round table conference?

it is mention time and again, round table conference ,to address a conference.why?

1. I would assume that it means that everyone is equal and would have a chance to express their views.
2. With our current Politicians...it's basically a Circle-Jerk! lol
3. it is a meeting of peers, vs. a meeting/discussion that includes superiors and subordinates. 'roundtable' is used so that no one is 'at the head of the table', signifying the equality of the members
4. a conference or discussion involving several participants
5. the usual crap, sitting around a table having a conference.
